Rainbow Trout from Stream in Bay of Plenty

Image
Trout, that elusive prey that we spend all our time stalking...   We pulled out our trout fishing gear and had a sort up recently and have calculated that our trout above cost around two grand to get  !!    Was it worth it  ?  YES !!  Every second was worth it but you have to be into trout fishing to appreciate it.   This trout above we caught in a very small stream after an enjoyable day creeping about the trees along the stream and stalking a large group of trout and caught none of them.  Just about to give it up we tried one more time and ..  snap,  the line struck gold or rainbow in this case - it tasted divine too.  Smoked after being sprinkled with salt and brown sugar - sorry to all those who like to return their catch !

Fly Fishing Flies and other goodies

Image
What fly to use ?  After you have your rod the next question is which fly to use.   I like to have lots !  I needed lots to begin with as they decorated every available surface imaginable :) And I hate even the thought that I might not have enough of the right one for the job.   Besides I love the way they look and if all else fails, I can look at my fly case and wish I was fishing !                                     Gear I use: I normally use a Penn Fly Reel both for floating and sinking line and depending on the time of the year and what is around, favor Woolly Bugger flies   in various colors, but have caught mainly on the black woolly Bugger with the olive green one second best. What I love about fishing is being outside in the open air, with amazing scenery and painted skies like the one on the way to this fishing spot - what could be better ? A r...

Fishing a Small Stream NZ

Image
We took a few weeks off work and headed for one of our favorite small rivers to camp out and just fish.  Unfortunately, we took a non fisher person !   Don't ever do it !  Sure, they say they will be happy just reading, just absorbing the peace and quiet..... until ...... just as you are into serious concentration there is a loud screech and "Hey, check this out ......  did you see this, ,,,  what about that bird, this bush  etc........   meanwhile the fish is long gone, not to mention                     your concentration !       We were lucky enough to return, by ourselves, without the non fisher person !   Armed with our new gear and some new techniques and better ways to tie on our flies so they wouldn't disappear at the first tug of the line we were again hooked  !!   I think this fishing think seems to be working in reverse  - we are hooked, the fish wasn't. ...

The Fly Casting Lesson comical effect on the Rookie Fly Fishers !

Image
In an attempt to match our new found wildly exciting passion for fly fishing and fly fishing trips away with some degree of skill we joined a local Anglers club and were delighted to find they had free casting lessons. We sauntered into our first meeting and could hardly contain our impatient excitement until the casting lessons began. Just to be amongst it again, the atmosphere, the gear, tackle, flyfishing rods - fisher's heaven ....... mmmmmmnnn should be fun......... We listened to the tips and techniques, then there was a mad rush when to get there before everyone else . We didn't win the race to cast first and as we waited our turn watching everyone else casting the lines whirred back and forth at high speed in uncontrolled directions. Excitement gave way to fear and panic and to avoid the flicking lines we flattened out against the fence and tried desperately to look nonchalant and relaxed as the lines flew around narrowly missing our faces and swishing ...

Trout fishing tale from a Kiwi flyfisher

Why fly fish ? Forget all the hype about peace and tranquillity, being at one with your surroundings enjoying nature. The reality is most of us go fishing to get away from cell phones, work callouts, annoying neighbours, a boring job and to escape from those nagging jobs around the house and to beat that damned fish. We took it up firstly because we got to the stage where we could afford the fly rod, waders and all the gear and wanted to try something we'd always wanted to and escape the stress and commitments of the city. One trip was all it took. It wasn't the fish that was hooked. We were. From the first cast as the line glided over the gently swaying grass beside a still waterway reflecting the last rays of sun... that's all it took. We were in love with fishing and all things fishy. The peace, the tranquillity, at one with nature, yes, this was 'IT' - underlined, in capitals, we had found our true calling. Right ! Easy, peasy with helpers at...
